Your Organisation Doesn't Need to Do Everything

Trying to do everything can leave a social impact organisation stretched, unclear, and unable to do its best work. Here's why focus, clear priorities, and the courage to say no can lead to greater impact.

One of the easiest traps for a growing social impact organisation is trying to solve every problem at once. You start with one issue, then you discover another: a community needs something else, a funder asks about a different area, a partnership opportunity comes up, and before long, your organisation is doing ten different things and struggling to explain what it actually does.

More isn't always more, sometimes, doing fewer things better is what creates greater impact.

Start With Your Core

Ask yourself: What problem are we uniquely positioned to solve?

Your answer should be clear enough that someone can understand your organisation without needing a ten-minute explanation. A focused organisation is easier to build, easier to communicate, easier to partner with, and often easier to fund.

Learn to Say No

Not every opportunity is your opportunity. Some opportunities will look exciting but take your organisation away from its core work. Others may bring funding but create commitments that your team isn't ready to sustain.
Saying no doesn't mean you're not ambitious, it means you understand what you're building.

Build Around the Problem, Not the Trend

The social impact space has no shortage of new ideas, buzzwords, and funding priorities, but your community's needs should remain at the centre of your decisions.

Don't change your entire organisation because a particular issue is suddenly attracting funding.

Build around the problem you are committed to solving, then find the right resources and partnerships to help you do it well.

Impact Needs Focus

You don't need to be everywhere, you need to be useful where you are.

Build something your community trusts, get really good at it, document what you're learning, build relationships with people who share your vision, then grow when you're ready.

Sometimes the most strategic thing an organisation can do is focus, and there is nothing small about that.
